Veneer chessboards are as the name implies chessboards that are not made of solid woods. Although each one varies by manufacturer they generally comprise a veneer of a fine wood of around 1/16" thick which is then glued to a substrate made of MDF or a less expensive chipboard and then they are heavily lacquered to ensure that they are sealed and protected. Although these boards are inexpensive and may not appeal to the discerning chess collector they are very functional and often extremely attractive. They make great boards for some of our less expensive chessmen where the budget available for a complete chess set is limited. Since our chessboards and chess pieces may be purchased separately it is not uncommon for buyers to purchase a really nice set of chessmen with an inexpensive veneer board and then later, when funds permit, follow up with a second purchase of a luxury solid wood chessboard. |
