Carved Camel Bone Chess Pieces

Carved Camel Bone Chess Pieces

Our enormous collection of exquisitely carved bone chess sets and pieces show various styles depicting historical and regional tastes up to and including the staunton pattern chess set. These figurine chess sets are carved in bone by India's finest artisans who used to carve in ivory prior to it's abolition under the CITES Agreement. Bone taken from naturally expired camels and buffalo is now the material of choice. Many of these unique chess sets are only available from The Chess Piece. Several are offered in a range of historically traditional and unusual colors making them popular as modern and contemporary decoration chess sets in libraries, offices, hotrels and at home. We carry the largest inventory of collectible bone sets in the US and have supplied many collectors throughout the world. We also have supplied custom hand carved chess sets specifically to customers' own designs. Some of our designer chess sets have been used in movies and television productions.

Carved Wooden Chess Pieces

Our decorative hand-carved and decorated special theme wooden sets are made available in a combination of fine woods and sizes, including sheesham, ebony, rosewood, bud rosewood (red sandal wood) and of course stained boxwood. These are extremely popular chess sets and can be relatively inexpensive despite high degrees of quality in both the turning of the chess pieces or filigree carving of the embellishments that lead to such attractive designs such as the lotus. These are inexpensive sets and yet highly collectible chess sets. Some of the chessmen are reproductions of original antique sets and others are modern designs made by artisans showing real creativity in chess sets design. Wooden Chessmen

Wooden Chessmen

Wood has been for generations the most popular material to use to make chess pieces. This is due to the abundance of the material and ease of carving and machining. Our huge selection of wooden chess pieces are available in a very wide variety of styles and woods. Most chess sets have the white pieces made of boxwood but the black side of the chess set can be of stained black boxwood (often referred to as ebonized) or different woods which vary widely in cost and availability. Relatively inexpensive sets use sheesham (also referred to as sissoo (Dalbergia Sissoo) which is hard and durable and good for chess club sets and golden rosewood, a wider grained version which is lighter in color and often used in chessboards. Good quality sets generally use Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) which is closely grained red/dark brown and luxury sets use exotic woods including Indian ebony (Diospyrus Ebenum) , Red Sandalwood (Budrosewood) and African Padauk (Bloodrosewood) and other exotic woods. Our wooden chess pieces cover all the most popular styles and because we direct purchase most of these sets our prices are very competitive.

Staunton Chess Pieces

Staunton Chess Pieces

Staunton chess pieces are composed of a particular type of chess pieces used to play the game of chess and most commonly made of wood. According to the  rules of chess, this style is to be used for competitions.Nathaniel Cook is credited with the design, and they are named after Howard Staunton a well-respected English Chess Champion who was prepared to endorse the new design. This style of set was first made available by Jaques of London in 1849, and they quickly became the international standard. It is worth noting that Staunton is merely a 'pattern' of chess set (like an SUV is a type of motor vehicle). Staunton is NOT a manufacturer but it represents pieces that comprise Kings and Queens, a bishop with miter, a knight as a horse and rooks that resemble castles. They are manufactured all over the world have been used around the world since. Most of our collection of luxury Staunton Chess Pieces are made for us in Amritsar, India which is the hub of chess manufacturing.
