A popular collector's design of chess set featuring a 3" King carved and hand decorated in camel bone.

This set is a modern interpretation of a centuries old design. Following in the Muslim tradition that forbade the carving of graven images, this set features a geometric pattern. The king and queen (shah and firzan) are represented by two towers. The rook (rukh) is a smaller version of the king and queen. The bishop (fils) is a taller version of the knight (faras), perhaps developed at a time when the current style of play gave a stronger weight to the bishop. The pawns (baidaq) are simple turnings with less ornamentation. Originally designed to be a small carry set played on a roll-out leather or fabric board, the proportions of this set have been modified to modern play.
