The German Barleycorn Bone Chessmen
The German Barleycorn Bone Chessmen

This very attractive new bone design referred to as the German plain barrleycorn and also the "Nuremberg" features considerable artistic turning and carving but lacks the foliate design of the standard Barleycorn design. It is so named because it was felt to have originated from Nuremberg, a major trading City in Bavaria, Germany in the 18th Century. Most chess collectors refer to this as the plain barleycorn.

From another historical perspective we are also told that this set almost resembles the James Madison and Thomas Jefferson set used at Montpelier and the set which is on display at Madison's home in Orange, VA.

It features a King which is 4 1/4" tall and a base diameter of 1 3/8" with green felt pads.

One side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens have large barreled stems, bishops with split mitres, knights with arched horses' heads, rooks as turrets with spire finials and raised on baluster knopped columns, pawns with tear-drop shaped finials, the king 4 1/4" high, the pawn 2 1/8" high.

The pictures are shown on our optional golden rosewood and camel bone chessboard which has 2" squares.

Either of these chessboards may purchased separately and are not included in the price of these fine chessmen. Most people buy the 18" golden rosewood board with 2" squares as shown here
