The Original Staunton antiqued in ebony and antiqued boxwood
The Original Staunton antiqued in ebony and antiqued boxwood

The very first Staunton chess piece design (referred latterly as Staunton pattern) was the design of Nathaniel Cook and later was endorsed by English Chess Champion, Howard Staunton in 1849.

The Staunton design has since gone through many iterations expressing art in the set and some individual masterpieces of master knight carvers with authentic and magnificent beauty in the horse (knight) carving which differs so much from the original, yet simplistic design from a master carvers point of view.

In actuality, the original is much more difficult to create than meets the eye. Our "Original Staunton" design we present here is a recreation of ours that took many months to complete to ensure that it was as near to the original Staunton pattern set of chessmen that was first released and given Howard Staunton's name.

This set of 34 chessmen are of extremely high quality and will not disappoint any truly discerning buyer. The pieces are very well weighted and are being offered at a very special price for the season.

Comprising genuine ebony and antiqued boxwood these pieces are a pleasure to handle with wider than normal base dimensions and excellent proportioning. Take a look at each individual piece including the carving of the wafer thin collars on the pawns...

The King is 4.4" tall and has a base dimension of 1 15/16" with beautifully cut, billiard felt pads. The finishing is excellent and this includes the consistency in the antiquing of the boxwood pieces.

The King weighs 4.2 ounces and the complete set weighs 5lbs 5 ounces.

They say a picture conveys a thousand words...we give pictures of each piece in up to 1500 pixels exposing every single possible detail...ask any competitor of ours to do that and you may be surprised at their response! When you are paying hundreds of dollars for a set of chessmen then it's not unreasonable of you to be able to take a close look!

Please note, the above set is in process of improvement and will be discontinued as exactly described above. In the case of new designs as this was last year, there is always a need for continued design iterations which can enhance customer expectations for visual accurateness and product performance. Due to a higher than tolerable propensity to cracking in only some climates, we have reduced the weighting minimally in the new version. As at 11/9/14 we were expecting new inventory within 3 weeks but this has been delayed and we have determined that it would be unwise to accept backorders until inventory has been received, inspected and checked against our amended specification. All the OS1 sets shipped were accurately described as above in terms of sizing, color, weight and quality of carving/turning. This will also be the case  with our new version (OS2) expected soon.

Original Staunton - I'm Very pleased

- 6/30/2014

The set is everything described at the thechesspiece.com web site.  I had not realized until around the time I ordered it how close it is to the original Staunton.  The set shown on the Wikipedia page as the original is nearly identical with some small differences mostly in the knight and bishop.  One thing I notice about the knight in this set is the fine carving especially in the eyes, teeth and mane (32 divisions in the mane - numerically significant if I counted right).  I did look this horse in the mouth. 10 nicely symmetrical chompers. This particular knight conveys the classicality of the Parthenon pieces that are its inspiration. The kings are impressively massive. Queens - perfect crenels. Rooks - to spec, straight towers. Pawns - round heads look a little larger than usual, I'm fine with it. Bishops - and I'm real particular about bishops - are widely mitred with a fine slightly angled cut to make the sliced-finial and a bottom curved blend, more nicely executed than in the picture on the websit...

Awesome deal

- 2/12/2014

I purchased this beautiful chess set after looking around comparing features and prices. After spending a great deal of time I found nothing comparable in price when considering the quality of this set. Gorgeously stunning to see and play with. This classic set delivers exquisite craftsmanship and beauty and I could not be more delighted.
