We are pleased to introduce The Staunton Moderne, designed by Fred Lackaff. The set is entirely hand made in India and takes some influences from the original Staunton design and places this into a 21st Century setting with a very enhanced modern feel. While being in some sense geometrically similar to the Bauhaus design these pieces have Staunton artistic elements showing defining the rook, knight and bishop as a castle, horse and knave shaping. These pieces certainly lend themselves to any contemporary home or office but also can bring a bright artistic twist to any modern home. Each piece is made of traditional boxwood (white) or sheesham (brown) and are finished in a natural buff. The King’s height is 3.25” with a base width being square is 1 ¼” x 1 ¼” with green felt pad. The pawn is 1 ¾” tall with the same base dimension.
This set may be purchased independently of the chessboard shown and wooden storage box which has a sliding lid. If you would like these items as well as the chess pieces then please select from the drop down menu below.
Do you notice so many artistically carved sets tend to be on the 4"+ side? These chessmen are suitable for a board with 1 3/4" squares and so will not take up room in that apartment or office. This Regal design has a very appealing style. These are beautifully hand carved and turned solid wooden pieces, double weighted and felted. The main feature to this amazingly detailed set are the knights. The knights are nicely carved making this a fascinating set and great value given the wood and carving/turning quality.
Features a 3 Inch King with 1.5" base diameter on green felted pads. Made of boxwood and padauk.
This is a wooden reproduction of the Mozarab chess set, also known as the pieces of Saint Genadio, may be as old as the beginning of the 10th century. Only 4 pieces of that set were found and made of ivory and preserved in the Mozarabic monastery in Leon, Spain.
